Have you ever felt like you owned too much clothing? A while back I noticed my closet was overflowing with clothing, but I was wearing the same few items on repeat and not enjoying my personal style. The decision fatigue caused by my closet chaos was real.
Now that I am in a better place, I wanted to share the three steps that helped.
Things I did to get out of my closet rut….
1. One big clean-out! Now listen, I wasn’t looking to create one of those situations where you are hating your life choices halfway through the project while standing in a pile of your bad decisions. As a result, I chose not to empty the whole closet for this task. Instead, I created a donate pile and a warm weather pile. I went hanger by hanger and decided if it stayed, was a donation item, or needed to be stored for colder months. Removing all cold weather clothing to make room for clothing that was appropriate for the current climate made a huge dent and suddenly I could SEE what was in my closet. We had reached critical mass! I used a vacuumed sealed bag to store away warmer weather clothes, and tucked it into storage under my bed.
2. I set aside any items that needed to be donated. This included things I don’t ever wear, didn’t fit well, or I simply didn’t want anymore.
3. I created a dressing area that is both beautiful and practical. This new area inspires me to get dressed, and it has a stand-up steamer that I keep on the ready for steaming outfits quickly. I noticed that if something was super wrinkly I just kinda of slipped it back into the closet and picked a wrinkle free item! This meant many of my cutest pieces never got worn! Having a steamer ready to go has been a GAME CHANGER!
Of note, I didn’t do this all in one day. I am a mom and a busy professional. This all took place over several weeks. It could easily be tackled on a weekend if you wanted, but I did all little by little starting with the closet clean-out. Do you need a closet clean out? If so, you’ve got this! I’m rooting for you!
